MISSION NEWS

MISSION - ST James Hospital Mantšonyane Lesotho

St Peter and St Paul Saltwood has been supporting the Hospital for over 25 years in this time raising over £2000 per annum.

This hospital serves an area so rugged that much of it is only passable on horseback.
Can you imagine being seriously ill and having to make a three-hour journey on horseback over mountainous terrain to reach your nearest clinic, possibly in sub-zero temperatures and in snow? This is not uncommon for many of the 67,000 people in the mountains of Lesotho.

Local transportation can sometimes be nothing more than a simple wheelbarrow

Lesotho is a poor country, completely surrounded by its neighbour, South Africa, and is struggling to meet the needs of its people. The winter snows in the mountains may be picturesque, but the effects on the health of people living in small homesteads dotted across the valleys is severe.

St Jame's, Mantšonyane, is a 60 bed hospital with a number of outlying clinics and village health posts. It is situated in the centre of this mountainous country in southern Africa and provides vital health care to widely scattered communities. Government grants are inadequate and the hospital relies heavily on donations. Your support is vital

The Kingdom of Lesotho is an independent country landlocked by South Africa, and often called the 'kingdom in the sky' or the 'roof of Africa' because the entire country is at an altitude of 1300 metres or over.

St James Mission Hospital was founded in 1963 by the Anglican Church, and is situated in the geographic centre of Lesotho at an altitude of 2,300 metres.
It is connected to the capital Maseru by road, which is mostly sealed and accessible in most weather conditions.
The hospital has 60 beds and serves a population of 66,000 people living in small villages scattered throughout an area of 2,000 sq. kms.
St James is responsible for the implementation of curative and preventative services within its region. Because of its difficult terrain, many people live from one hour to two days' horse ride away from the hospital. To overcome this problem a network of permanent and semi-permanent clinics and village health posts has been set up.
