Men's Breakfast - 15th January 2011

Barrie Marshall and the team laid on a splendid breakfast, although the toast was slightly overdone with the result that we set the fire alarm off! No names to be mentioned but an anagram of 'Rooted Nephew'. After the alarm was eventually silenced, we were then privileged to hear Colonel Mike Ball, Regimental Secretary of the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment who reflected on his own army career and the challenges faced by our young men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Christmas Services 2010

Many thanks to all who contributed to our Christmas services. The choir, handbell ringers and music groups made a truly joyful noise to the Lord. Diana Maxfield and her team of flower arrangers provided a wonderful visual feast with some beautiful arrangements, whilst Barrie Marshall and his team offered hospitality at the extra services.

Stewardship Renewal Campaign 2010

Thank you to all who attended our stewardship presentation evenings. During these we looked at the opportunities we have to contribute through our time, talents and money. If you have not received a stewardship form, please contact Laurie Maxfield.

Autumn Fair - 9th October 2010

Over two hours, Val Adams and the Autumn Fair team raised over £2,000 for mission. A wonderful effort, and thanks to everyone who contributed.

Garden Safari and Choral Evensong - 27th June 2010

Spirits were raised, not by England's football performance, but by choral evensong. About 45 of us gathered to hear our choir sing Samuel Wesley's anthem "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ". We were also privileged to hear Frank Allen, Missionary to HM Forces, speak about his work and to offer some reflections on remembrance. The retiring collection raised about £125.00 towards the Village Society's War Memorial project.

Christian Aid Week - 9th to 15th May 2010

Thanks to Penny Forsyth who co-ordinated our team of volunteer collectors. We raised over£2,000 which was an increase on last year, and a great encouragement in this time of financial challenges. Thank you to all who helped and especially, of course, to those who donated.

Episcopal Visitation - 12th May 2010

This year, the Archdeacon's Visitation to swear in new Churchwardens was taken by Bishop Trevor and comprised both Archdeaconaries. Therefore it was not possible to invite all to the event, but the Bishop's visitation address is available online.

Lent Lunches - 27 March 2010

Thank you to all who have supported the Lent Lunches by making (or consuming!) soup. We had 505 people attend during the six weeks, which was a 25% increase on last year. Our mission project in Lesotho will benefit considerably from the proceeds.

Saltwood Lent Talks - 23 March 2010

The Saltwood Lent talks were on baptism and the journey of faith. During the studies we reflected on the journey of faith of a number of biblical characters, as well as our own. We concluded by looking at what we, as a church and as individuals, can do to encourage others on their journey.  We felt that we were a friendly church which helped people to feel welcome and to belong, but we could do more to help nurture and encourage people in the the faith. Please consider this prayerfully, so that we might respond appropriately.

Bishop Trevor - 2 March 2010

Bishop Trevor visited Elham Deanery as part of a programme of visits "to get to know you, and for you to get to know me". In the morning he visited the Folkestone Academy and after midday prayers, lunched with deanery clergy and laity. In the afternoon he visited the Rainbow Centre and Operation Sunshine. After meeting local dignitaries, including our own County Councillor Susan Carey, at Shorncliffe Barracks he held an open Q&A session at the Tower Theatre. Saltwood Church was very strongly represented - thank you for making the effort.

Lent Lunches - Saturdays in Lent

A Big thank you to Sue Beggs and her team of volunteers for providing two wonderful Lent lunches so far. Our first lunch started with nearly 70 people, and our second was 90 which meant there was a real 'buzz' in the Lads' Club. In faith we are putting in an extra table for next week and hope to break the 100 barrier. Come along and bring a friend or family. Rumour has it we have a professional chef on the team next week...

Church Photoboard - 7 Feb 2010

Thanks to Dale Crook for starting the mammoth effort of photographing the church family! The new priest-in-charge has discovered that he is not the only one who doesn't know everybody's name so this project will gradually result in a photoboard at the back of church with the 'names and faces' of eveyone in the Saltwood and Pedlinge congregations. Dale will be at a number of our services over the next month or so, to capture as many people 'en famille' as possible. If you do not want to be involved, it is a simple matter of not posing for the photograph.  There will be arrangements made for those who miss all the opportunities, but if you can take the opportunity to get 'snapped' by Dale it would make our job much easier.

Bishop of Dover - 6 Feb 2010

The Rt Rev'd Trevor Willmott was installed as Bishop of Dover at Evensong in Canterbury Cathedral. Bishop Trevor will be visiting our Deanery on Tuesday, 2nd March 2010. Please put the date in your diary and check out the details on the Special Events page.

Mission Jumble Sale - 6 Feb 2010

Thanks to all those who manned and supported the Mission Jumble sale. We raised £381.00, compared with nearly £500 in the previous year. It was a good effort considering we had much less 'jumble' to sell this year. We have another sale at Michaelmas, so please save your jumble, as the St. James Hospital project in Lesotho needs our help.

New Parish Secretary - 1 Feb 2010

Thanks to Cheryl Tomlinson for serving as Parish Secretary for many years. Although Cheryl will continue to help with the Parish Magazine, Sara Burridge has taken over as Parish Secretary. The email address remains the same parishoffice [replace with at sign] saltwoodchurch.org, and is automatically redirected to Sara.
