One activity was to build a tower out of newspaper, sticky tape and string. (Not the first time that SOS members have been engaged in such a project.) Three teams, having had five minutes to build a self supporting tower, were then asked to combine their structures to make one tower sufficiently high to reach the ceiling. The only difference was that from this point on they could only communicate to the other members of five new teams by making a certain noise. We had hummers, whistlers, burblers, and raspberry blowers etc. Not surprising in the pandemonium, we ended up with a smaller tower after this combined effort than any of the originals. This brought out the way God had dealt with those who attempted to erect the Tower of Babel. A lot of fun was had by all.
After a mid - morning break we explored the way in which Jesus is right at the centre of absolutely everything and how he turns the rules of earthly kingdoms upside down and we nailed our thoughts about this to a wooden cross. |
Saturday afternoon was spent going round Battle Abbey and doing a bit of shopping. On our return to Ashburnham we played a game entitled “Weird, Wild and Wonderful” teasing out the themes from the Book of Revelation. We spent the rest of Saturday in the games room, watching videos or just relaxing.
We spent Sunday morning preparing for a communion service in which the prayers, music and an acting out of the Gospel passage were prepared and led by SOS members.
Quotes: ‘Well the weekend was very good. We went to Battle Abbey and had lots of sweets and I slept well. The showers were good. The food was nice. I like the apricot cheesecake but didn’t like the apricots on top! I had a good time.’
‘I think we should do it again.’
‘This weekend was great and fun and I liked it. Everything was nice even the food.’
